Lean Six Sigma (LSS) blends the principles of Lean and Six Sigma to create a powerful framework for improving quality, reducing costs, and driving efficiency.

This certificate provides a solid foundation in Lean Six Sigma concepts and tools that are essential for process improvement in both manufacturing and service systems. Whether you're looking to enhance quality, lower costs, or lead transformative projects, this certificate equips you with the strategies and tools to make a tangible impact in any industry.

You will develop the knowledge and skills to apply Lean Six Sigma principles and methodologies to identify, define, analyze, and develop solutions for process improvement challenges. You'll explore topics such as value stream mapping, root cause analysis, waste elimination and process flow optimization.

The certificate is a 12-credit program consisting of four courses. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate Lean Six Sigma tools in each phase of the DMAIC process
  • Apply Lean Six Sigma principles and methodologies to manufacturing or service systems and processes
  • Perform statistical decision making in the context of process improvement
Required Courses

  • Introduction to contemporary engineering management concepts as they appear in organizations. Review of the challenges faced by such organizations, and the various methodologies in use to meet these challenges. Review of the complex and dominant role that quality plays in creating excellent customer-supplier relationships. Discussion of quality goals and management strategies to achieve them.

  • This course provides students with fundamentals in probability and statistics with an emphasis on their applications in quality and engineering management. Topics include descriptive statistics of random variables, central limit theorem, probability and sampling distributions, statistical estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and statistical quality control.

  • Concepts of lean production, Japanese production systems, push vs. pull production systems, benchmarking and evaluation schemes, schedule management, overcoming bottlenecks, and performance and productivity improvement techniques applicable to service and manufacturing systems. Workforce issues (affairs) including union acceptance, productivity, and workforce education, training and compensation.

  • This course provides students with knowledge and skills to apply lean six sigma in managing quality at all levels of an organization. Topics include: waste, process flow, value stream management, process benchmarking, DMAIC process, statistical process control, basic experimental design techniques, and other LSS tools.

Admissions Requirements

As this is a Graduate level certificate, applicants must hold a minimum of a Bachelors degree to apply. While it is encouraged that applicants have a Bachelors degree in a STEM field, all disciplines will be considered.

For application – a resume, transcripts of former degree(s), and a brief statement of purpose are required. The GRE and letters of recommendation are not required.
