Does AV require all students have health insurance coverage?
AV requires all students maintain major medical insurance as a condition of enrollment. AV offers a health insurance plan designed specifically for students through United HealthCare. Domestic students may waive health insurance coverage if they present evidence of other health insurance, including coverage under a parent’s or guardian’s plan, that provides benefits equal to or greater than the Student Health Insurance Plan administered by United HealthCare.
Visit the Student Health Insurance Website for plan information and to enroll, or to submit your waiver. Use your AV student email and password to log in.

Why is AV outsourcing Student Health Services to Hartford HealthCare?
This is part of AV’s commitment to emphasizing individual health and well-being as a top priority to foster both personal and academic success. UNewHaven has selected Hartford HealthCare to operate its on-campus Student Health Services because of the health system’s experience serving student populations at other institutions, its collaborative and coordinated health care model, and ability to provide expert consultation to the University on a wide range of campus health issues including student wellness, mental health and infection prevention strategies. This brings extensive added depth in health care expertise and resources to support our students and gives families peace of mind they’re receiving excellent care when needed while away from home.
-
What is the benefit of outsourcing Student Health Services to Hartford HealthCare?
Student demands on our on-campus healthcare services have grown exponentially. The benefits of having Hartford HealthCare provide health services to our students include:
- Access to over 3,000 doctors, specialists, counselors and others who work for Hartford HealthCare;
- Prescriptions delivered directly to campus – DAILY – for pick up in Student Health Services;
- Student access to a mobile health app and a nationally-connected electronic health record, which means all their health information is in one place and easy to access to improve how their care is coordinated;
- Expansion of the range of services provided to our students or through referrals, including preventive care, treating illnesses, mental health, athletic training, infection prevention strategies and more.
-
What are the benefits of signing up for a MyChartPLUS account?
MyChartPLUS allows access to your personal health records and an online connection to health services. MyChartPLUS allows the following functions: communicating with your health providers within the HHC network, requesting appointments, requesting prescription refills, accessing test results, viewing of medications and allergies, and more.
-
Why is Hartford HealthCare billing our insurance company for services received at AV’s Student Health Services?
By having a trusted, statewide healthcare system operate our Student Health Services, a visit to the on-campus health clinic is similar to visiting a local doctor’s office, hospital or walk-in clinic. Just as any healthcare provider you see at home in your local community bills your insurance company for their services, Hartford HealthCare is doing the same for services they provide in our on-campus health clinic.
-
How will I know if my insurance is in network to see a provider in UNewHaven’s Student Health Services now that it’s run by Hartford HealthCare?
Care providers in our Student Health Services Center will be employees of Hartford HealthCare Medical Group (HHCMG) and be considered part of the HHC network of providers beginning July 1, 2025. Most health insurance plans accept HHC Medical Group as an in-network provider, including: Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Connecticare, Health New England, Multiplan, United Healthcare, and Wellcare.
Please note: call your carrier to confirm Hartford HealthCare is in your network and share with them the “HHCMG Specialty” Tax ID Number: 37-1911194.
-
Why must students use their insurance ID card when visiting Student Health Services?
Students must present their insurance ID card when seeking care at Student Health Services to validate their insurance coverage and to enable Hartford HealthCare to bill the student’s insurance company for the services delivered. A physical ID card is required to be uploaded into MyChartPLUS for a student’s first visit to the health center. It will be on file after that first visit.
-
Why is there a copay for visiting Student Health Services?
A copay is only collected if the student’s insurance plan has a copay as part of the terms and conditions of the plan. Since Hartford HealthCare is billing insurance for services received in our on-campus health clinic, it must collect the appropriate copay in accordance with the plan’s coverage guidelines.
-
Does the copay need to be paid at the time of the visit, and if so how can students pay?
Students will need to make all copays or health service-related payments directly to HHC when they visit Student Health Services. Payment can be made via MyChartPLUS.
-
Will Hartford HealthCare bill the insurance company for all services received in Student Health Services?
Hartford HealthCare will bill insurance for all medical services.
-
What if a student’s insurance plan is an HSA (Health Savings Account) plan? Do they still have to pay a copay?
You will follow the standard HSA guidelines for payment of services once the claim is submitted to your health insurance company.
-
What are the two consent forms students were asked to sign?
Beginning July 1, 2025, health services historically provided by Northeast Medical Group (NEMG) will be outsourced to Hartford HealthCare Medical Group (HHCMG), which will become the exclusive provider of health services for AV students. As part of this transition and to enable HHCMG to support our students’ care needs, we ask they please sign a consent form that will ensure HHC care providers can coordinate any care needed with the AV Leadership.
- HIPAA authorization form — this gives HHCMG permission to share with certain AV University offices relevant medical information when needed for student support services, accommodations or other forms of university support.
-
What does it mean to see a virtual provider during my visit at Student Health Services
When you schedule an appointment at UNewHaven Student Health Services, you will be roomed by a nurse or medical assistant who will take your vital signs and connect with a virtual provider. The nurse or medical assistant will be with you throughout the entire visit, unless you determine that you’d like to speak with the provider privately.
